National Centre for Research





The National Centre for Research (NCR) was established in 1991 to replace the former National Council for Research established in 1970. NCR was established as a fully fledged multidisciplinary institution mandated to conduct scientific applied research for development in specialized areas not adequately covered by other research organizations e.g. medicinal and aromatic plants, remote sensing, biotechnology..etc. NCR was under the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. When the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) operated in 2001 NCR was incorporated with other bodies under MOST.



  1. In accordance with provisions of the third constitution 1989, the National Salvation Council made the provisional order and cited the National Centre for Research Act 1991.
  2. It cancelled the National Council for Research article 1977, but still its provisions continue to perform their duties and power under Act 1991 until they are altered or reconstituted.
  3. Act 1991 provides also Title and commencement, establishment, duties, powers and general provision.

The National Council for Research was turned to The National Centre for Research under the  Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in 1991 as a fully fledge multidisciplinary institution mandated to conduct scientific and applied research for development, and its directors were as follows:

The National Centre for Research was affiliated to the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2001 and its director became:

  1. Setting of general scientific and technological policies that aim at achieving the economic and social development of the country.
  2. Conduct scientific and applied research that connected with the purposes of development;
  3. Encouragement of scientific research, and its development in the fields within its competence;
  4. Provision of support for researches which are in compliance with the center policies and plans and offering of possible assistance to researches according to its facilities;
  5. Endeavor to transfer and assimilation and development of an appropriate technology;
  6. Qualification and training of researchers and research assistants in the center and to contribute in the training of employees in the other research and scientific fields that fall within its competence;
  7. Encouragement of publication and documentation in the scientific and technological fields;
  8. Giving advice to the organs of the state and the private sector in fields of its specialization whenever requested to do so or in its own motion;
  9. Encouragement of private sector to develop applied research and the results there from and the development of the use of technologies in the industrial and service fields;
  10. Diffusion and encouragement of spirit of innovation exploration, invention and strive to achieve scientific pioneering;
  11. Strengthening the cooperation relation with the scientific and research institutions and organizations inside and outside the Sudan, especially the Arab, Islamic and African countries;
  12. Call for the laying down the scientific research ethics, the commitment to the values of belief, goodness and virtue, organization of scientific research and linking the same with the national cultural heritage.

Organizational Structure

On top of the organizational structure is the NCR council , the General Director, Deputy Director and the Principal. The research Institutes, Corporations and Centres as defined in 1991 Act.

Some of NCR activities in research and technology transfer:

§  Use of biological fertilizers such as isolates of Rhizobium bacteria

§  Use of plant extracts for control of pests within the context of Integrated Pest Management approach.

  • Applied research and investigations for the production of pulp and paper, and wood composites from local cellulosic fibrous raw material.
  • Development of technology to improve local building materials, design techniques, and basic services to provide descent living environment.
  • Research in shelter and habitat; a national research project.
  • Breeding drought resistant and quick maturing crops suitable for dry lands.
  • Research leading to control of endemic diseases e.g. Malaria, Bilharziasis, and Leishmaniasis . 
  • Application of Remote Sensing in different fields relating to exploitation of natural resources and the environment.
  • Authentication and documentation of the traditional medical practices.
  • Research in herbal remedies and aromatic plants for validation of efficacy and safety.

Organizational Structure

On top of the organizational structure is the NCR council, the General Director, Deputy Director and the Principal. The research Institutes, Corporations and Centres as defined in 1991 Act.

At the direction of the presidency and on the basis of the decisions and deliberations of the ninth  Scientific Conference in the context of research and development relating to financing of scientific research reviewed the management of the National Center for Research since its inception in order to improve performance and enable the Centre to fulfill its mission to the fullest and to highlight its effective role in the development.

The new organizational was functional on the first of the month of Shaban for the year 1434 AH corresponding to 06/10/2013. To be as follows:
