Environment and Natural Resources and Desertification Research Institute (ENDRI)


  • § Environment and Natural Resources Research Institute (ENRRI) was established in 1992.  The need for a body to carryout applied research in the field of conservation and development of natural resources and their sustainable utilization as well as environment protection was the main reason for establishing ENRRI.
  • § ENRRI (1992- 2013) succeeded to conduct research and to apply technologies in the fields of biofertilization, alternatives to pesticides and biological control, monitoring and removal of pollutants and waste recycling. In addition to the research in the field of honey bee rearing, indigenous plants and fisheries.
  • § Recognizing the importance of desertification as the main environmental problem in Sudan and cognizant with United Nation’s Convention to Combat Desertification (CCP) and the government of Sudan commitment to combat desertification, the Desertification Research Department in ENRRI was promoted to become a separate Institute with the name of Desertification Research Institute (DRI) in 2002.
  • § As from (2002-2013), DRI conducted basic and applied research as well as studies on the biological, physical and socio-economic problems of arid and semi arid regions.  Elrewakeeb Dry land Research Station was taken as a site to conduct search on methods to control Desertification.
  • In recent years, the pressures on natural resources have intensified and desertification has become a serious problem facing Sudan, especially after the separation of the southern part of Sudan, when the percentage of dry areas to wet areas decreased tremendously and the forest area became 12% of the total area of North Sudan compared to 27% before the separation of the south.Therefore, it was agreed that scientific efforts, research facilities and experience of researchers should be dedicated to conduct applied research aiming at resolving problems related to environmental pollution, combat of desertification and sustainable utilization of natural resource for the betterment of the society and the environment.
  • § Again in 2013, with the aim to sustainable use of the meager resources and for more consolidation of research efforts, the Institute of Environment and Natural Resources together with the Institute of Desertification were amalgamated to form the current institute (ENDRI).
  • § The Institute has well equipped laboratories that are managed by a team of dedicated and experienced technical and research staff. Currently, there are 67 researchers and 40 technicians in addition to a number of supporting staff of clerks and labourers.


General Objectives:

The general objectives of ENDRI are to:

  1. conduct applied research and studies in the different fields of environment, natural resources and desertification aiming at environmental protection and optimization of available natural resources.
  2. conduct research on biological, physical and socio-economic problems of arid and semi arid regions and advise on possible curative measures, making use of rain water harvesting and spreading and modern irrigation systems, as well as harnessing renewable energy sources and develop technologies useful in desertified environment.
  3. adopt and apply environmentally friendly technologies.
  4. assess and monitor the impact of human activities on different ecosystems.
  5. train personnel in the fields relevant to institute’s activities.
  6. promote collaborative research programmes with local, regional and international organization.
  7. disseminate environmental knowledge and research results.
  8. organize conferences, meetings, seminars and workshops related to different research areas of the Institute.
  9. provide technical advices and consultancies for different beneficiaries in both public and private sectors.


To discharge its functions, the institute was restructured into nine research departments as follows:

  1. Department of Environmental Pollution Research and Studies.  The department conducts research aiming at assessing; monitoring and removing of different pollutants from different ecosystems, Moreover, research is directed to recycling and reuse methods of waste.
  2. Department of Animal Production in Arid Land. The department conducts research aiming at solving problems facing animal production in dry areas with high temperature, scarce feedstuff and restricted grazing opportunities. The research is supposed to solve problems of feeds by encouraging maximum utility of available resources and complementing deficiencies in feedstuff.
  3. Department of Soil and Water Resources Management:  the main activities of this department are; to study, monitor and assess land degradation, improve soil fertility, productivity and water holding capacity. Besides, sand dune movement and suitable means for fixation. The department also deals with water characteristics studies in arid and semi arid regions and it undertakes research on the development of sustainable management techniques including water harvesting and spreading, modern irrigation systems and water resources modeling.
  4. Department of Socio-Economic Studies: The main objectives of the department are to study the socio-economic impacts of the various research projects implemented by the institute as well as the factors which can lead to environmental degradation and environmental risks.
  5. Department of Alternatives to Pesticides and Biofertilizers: the research activities undertaken by the department involve increasing productivity and improving the quality of agricultural crops using environmentally friendly biofertilizers and biocides, Moreover, it aims at establishment of microbial bank resources and utilization of these microbes for the cleaning up of chemical pollutants.
  6. Department of Bees Research: development and improvement of beekeeping in Sudan, and improvement of quantity and quality of agricultural crops by using honeybees pollinations, are the main objectives of this department. In addition, emphases are directed to the importance of various other bee products.
  7. Department of Range and Browse: the main objective of this department is the formulation and execution of basic and applied research for evaluation, management and improvement of rangelands (including browse) that help to avoid rangeland deterioration and to maintain its sustainability.
  8. Department of Natural Resources and Biodiversity: the department is actively involved in conducting basic and applied research on natural resources and biodiversity in different environments and activating their conservation and sustainable use.
  9. Department of Crop Production and Plant Breeding in Dry lands: the department conducts applied research in the fields of plant breeding and crop production to provide drought tolerant cultivars, technological packages adequate for sustainable production and development of food and forage crops in arid and desertified areas.

Community Services:

  1. Provide consultancies in different areas related to institute activities.
  2. Production of  biofertilizer, compost and natural biocides.
  3. Design programs for desertification control in different States.
  4. Train postgraduate and undergraduate students.
  5. Provide laboratory services, environmental and agricultural extension.
  6. Dissemination of knowledge through publications and scientific meetings.

Future plans:

  1. Upgrading of some departments and promotion of certain projects into specialized research centers or institutes.
  2. Improvement of the infrastructure of the institute and making the labs services more responsive to the needs of researchers.
  3. Encouraging scientific publication. Possibilities of publishing special institute’s journal.
  4. Investment on some research findings to finance some of the institute programmes.


The institute collaborates with different research centers and similar institutes, universities and organizations at national, regional and international levels, in areas of common interest.
